Yesterday was the first day of school. It was kind of bittersweet. I love my kids. I like being around them. I like having them near me and I like not having to worry about getting up at 6:00am. But it was time. They were getting tired of summer whether they'll admit it or not.

Nate has the same teacher for second grade that Seth had for fourth. |
Joel has the same teacher for fifth grade that Seth had for fifth grade. |
So yesterday, I helped the boys get off to school and embarrassed them by being the mom who follows them into their classrooms to take pictures and then we had a nice relaxing day. Until they got home.
Daniel and I went to the library. We checked out books and dvds for me to watch while I ironed. I had called and canceled our TV provider on Monday. It was a leap of faith considering how much we have been watching it lately but I never wanted to be that type of family so now it is gone. Don't get me wrong. I like TV. It was just on too much and I felt like it was tempting me into staying up too late and my kids had it on too often. It was a pretty personal decision but I felt strongly like it was what I needed to do. People told me I wouldn't miss it and for the most part they are right. I am kind of enjoying the peace and quiet and not having to fight with my boys to turn the TV off and do their homework or chores. Anyway, after the library we ran some errands and then came home and did a bunch of housework then I made chocolate chip cookies.
In the afternoon we went to pick up the elementary school boys from school and waited for half an hour in the sweltering heat in the car line (someday I will own a car with reliable air conditioning and I will be grateful for it every day and never take it for granted). When I picked them up I asked them how their day was and Nate immediately got pouty. According to him he was the only kid in his whole class to get in trouble the whole day. Typical Nate. I hope we are not in for another very long year like last year. Joel had a great day and was happy.
When we got home I got a phone call from Seth saying he had missed his bus so I had to head over to the Jr. High to pick him up. By the time we got home I was nauseated from the extreme heat and super grumpy but happy to be back in my air-conditioned home. The boys started on homework and I started on dinner and then it was time to go to scouts. I dropped them off, came home put the little boys to bed, did more ironing and made sure everything was ready for a quick send-off in the morning again. I signed a million papers to be returned to school (only a million more to go!) and went to bed at 11:00 completely exhausted
So, there was pretty much no downtime at all yesterday. I made up for it today by falling asleep on the couch after I picked the boys up for school and sleeping until 7:00pm.
I need to find balance.

I love these pictures—the boys are all so cute! (Can an eighth grader still be called "cute"?)
Those handsome, handsome boys! I'll bet Danny missed them. Sorry about the air-conditioning in the car--shall we pray for an early Fall for your sake? I remember those "good-ol-days" of signing a million disclosure statements and filling out a million medical forms, etc., after the first day of school. It might be interesting someday to estimate just how many there were through 13 years of school with five kids! I figured out once how many parent-teacher conferences I had attended--I think it was in the billions. Lots of love and best wishes for a great school year.
