Halloween's Over
So Halloween is over. Whew. The boys had a lot of fun last night and came home with quite a bit of loot. David took them and a little neighbor girl who is in Seth’s class around the neighborhood. I stayed home and handed out candy. It brought back fond memories of last year and made me miss my friends in Rochester, but c’est la vie. It was interesting because about 5:45 the door bell rang and we thought it was the first trick-or-treaters but it was the girl from Seth’s class. She said “I need someone to go trick-or-treating with at 7:00.” We told her of course she could go with us and we’d stop over to pick her up (it was dark after all). She didn’t want us to pick her up she said she’d come over here when she was ready so we said fine. Well, the boys were getting restless because they’d been planning to go out around quarter after 6 so they finally went over to get her at around 6:45. The whole situation was odd to me. She’s only eight. Why would her mother send her to find someone to go with by herself? Also when they came to our house to trick or treat she was wearing a “ghost” costume. A white sheet with two holes cut for eyes. I asked her if she made her costume herself and she said yes. It was so sweet but sad at the same time. Now I have all these questions (because I am nosey) about why would a mother leave her 8 year old to make her own costume and leave her to find someone to trick or treat with by herself? I don’t know maybe I’m reading too much into it, but when I was eight my mom was still helping me a lot (maybe the little girl wanted to make her own costume—I don’t know) and I still helped my kids a lot this year. At least her mom made her find someone to go with and didn’t let her go by herself. She is such a sweet and quiet girl. We have never even met the girl’s mother but Seth says she lives with just her mom so maybe she’s a single woman who has to work two jobs or something like that. I just keep thinking I wish I had had a beautiful princess costume or something similar to give her so she didn’t have to wear a sheet that she kept tripping over…

That is so sad, Jill. I would come to the same conclusion as you did. It makes me ache thinking of my 8 year old daughter trying to figure out Halloween by herself. On the actual night of Halloween my 8 year old did want to get ready by herself this year, including her hair but I did purchase the costume with her. It really makes you think, doesn't it. I am grateful to have family to love.
