Of Letters and Other Lovely Things

I worked on organizing my room some more today. I found some treasures—a few delicate pressed flowers inside a thick gardening book. I think they are from my Grandpa’s funeral. I also came across these old letters that my cousin brought me when he came to visit recently. He thought I’d appreciate them since I grew up in Ohio. Handwritten letters are among the more lovely things in life. old letters I love the yellow envelope from this one.

There were several from the 30s but this one is dated 1877. One hundred and thirty four years old! Can you imagine. How different life must have been then.

In one of my piles was this quote that I had saved from a visiting teaching message:

“Never forget that these little ones are the sons and daughters of God ad that yours is a custodial relationship to them, that He was a parent before you were parents and that He has not relinquished His parental rights or interest in these His little ones. ... Rear your children in love, in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Take care of your little ones. Welcome them into your homes and nurture and love them with all of your hearts. They  may do, in the years that come, some things you would not want them to do, but be patient, be patient. You have not failed as long as you have tried” President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, July 1997, 73)

I love that last line. Isn’t that a lovely and encouraging thought: “You have not failed as long as you have tried.”

Other lovely things today included watching the new Karate Kid with my boys and laughing at Jackie Chan’s awesomeness. (love that guy), going grocery shopping with Seth this evening and getting milkshakes at Chick-Fil-A. He had cookies and cream. I had banana pudding. Have you ever had a banana pudding milkshake? I highly recommend it.

I so appreciate reading your lovely comments! What loveliness did the day bring to you?

A visit with grandma. New exercise clothes (on clearance AND in a smaller size!). New supplies for my scripture journal. :)

I got to take my girls to a community concert at one of the high schools in the area. Two of my YW were performing. This choir is the choir that "Vocal Adrenaline" on the show "Glee" is based on. They were so fantastic.
I liked spending that time with my daughters, as well as the look on the faces of the YW when they saw I was there to support them.

Thanks for the Hinckley reference! I might stick that in my Women's Conference talk.

Yesterday the dentist visit for the kids turned out to be lovely. And today, visiting with their teachers was lovely.

Oh Jill I loved your quote! I don't think that I have ever heard it before. I think that all parents should hear that. Sometimes it seems no matter how hard we try, things aren't always perfect but I am trying! Thanks for the "lovely" and encouraging words.
